Cheap may not be the right word, but this does not look like a car you can buy for 7 grand. But here it is.

The less you pay up front, the more expensive it will be in the long term. That said, it doesn't look TOO bad. Right? Right? That's a very bad idea.

And it's asking price in repairs due. Though once sorted I bet it's a dream.

Looks to be sitting a little low, hood might have a bend in it, I wouldn’t roll those dice.
A sorted one is a lot of style for the money, however.

Yeah I noticed that problem with the hood. That’s a big red flag.

I feel like asking what's wrong with that car might be the wrong approach, but rather asking what isn't wrong with it...

Probably quicker at a PPI, too

My official PPI results: don't buy it.

I was just checking out craigslist a couple days ago and was amazed at how cheap Mercedes and BMWs are (compared to any other car of the same year, mileage, and condition) . I think everyone, including non -car people, knows about their repair costs by now.

The hood doesn’t seem to fit and looks like it’s a slightly different color. Get a PPI and if the only issues are the cosmetics it could be a cheap, fun car for awhile.
(The cosmetics won’t be the only issue.)

Oh I have ZERO interest in buying this thing. I just think it’s pretty

Cars in the junkyard are “cheap”, too.

It is very pretty. I like all the generations of SL. I passed on one several years ago and wish I hadn’t. It was either an 83 or 84 though so something I could’ve maintained myself.

My father bought one of these new and it was like driving a couch, meh is right. The AMG maybe, but the base was very much a 2 seat grand tourer. My wife would love one if it was sorted though, don’t see finding that price point for that though.
Same year Boxster would be much more fun to drive.

Hey there - unrelated question on the M278 if you don’t mind. I just popped the small plastic covers off the top of the engine and looked at both the cam sensors and cam adjuster magnets externally (closely). Didn’t see any evidence of oil. Is that enough or do I need to take things apart and look closer? Wasn’t exactly sure how to pull the magnet connector without breaking fragile plastics, so I stopped there.
Thanks!

You need to look inside the electrical connectors. Slide the grey plastic tab backwards with a small flathead screwdriver, then squeeze and pull back. Use a flashlight to look.

Thanks!! Ok - will do. At least they’re easy to get to, right up front and under those plastic covers.

No problem!
